Has anyone ever been to Udon Thani, whats it like?

I'm outlook of going to Udon for 3 weeks this month (April)...yes, I know it'll be very hot and the water festival and Thai New Year....by a hair's breadth found good deals on an apartment and airfare so would like to know what you thought of Udon?

I like Udon its a bit more true than down south. People dont go there for the night lfe but its all available in downtown Udon. The prices are cheaper than down south - My Thai gf and I stayed at Thomas Spa and at AEK apartments plenty of accommodation

I was in udon in 1972 and 1973 for military work it is a nice place a busy city, yes it will be hot.
The water festival was great you will get wet Thais get a great boot out of wetting you.

If you are interested in "etc." and commodities value for your money you should have gone to Pattaya! Cheap bus ride from airport or from in the city. Hotels are budget-priced too! (Pattaya is around a 2 hour bus ride from Bangkok.)

I have been in Udorn many times. The last every now was 3 months ago. It's a relatively nice city and the people are wonderful. Vientienne, Laos is about an hour's ride away.

If you are looking for night life, Udorn is not the place.

Udon's smashing. I was there 3 days ago, There is a burgioning bar scene on a soi off the road to the Raiway station, plenty of ETC there. As well as bars on the way to the station. Not as certifiable as Pattaya but enough for 3 weeks. There is a British style

If you go to Udon Thani for jumpiness maybe it's the wrong place. But if you look for the real Thai life ISAAN is the place to be. And Udon Thani is in the waist of Isaan.
The shops are ok, with a really big shopping mall a nice night market
